Federal Constitutional Court: “Judges are also allowed to have opinions”

Reading time: 4 min.
|Brigitte Zypries was once the SPD's most important "judge-maker." She explains why candidates with a strong edge and profile are so important for the Karlsruhe court.
The election of three constitutional judges was canceled in the Bundestag on Friday—apparently a result of inadequate preparation by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)-Left Party (SPD) coalition. The CDU/CSU had originally supported the SPD's proposal to appoint Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf as a constitutional judge, but then canceled the election after resistance from within its own ranks. Brigitte Zypries, a member of the SPD in the Bundestag until 2017 and Federal Minister of Justice from 2002 to 2009, has handled personnel matters in Karlsruhe for more than ten years. The experienced "judge-maker" explains how to do it right.
